I Don't Think I Want to Work in the Field I Got My Degree In

Dear Nikki, I recently graduated with an Accounting degree and I’m currently interning at an accounting firm. After being here for about 4 months, I realized that this is something that I don’t want to do. I feel like other jobs that have nothing to do with accounting will not hire me. How can I apply for jobs that wouldn’t mind an unrelated degree, but still like the fact that I have a bachelors.

Bowie, Maryland.

Nikki:

You’d be surprised at how many people don’t find careers in the same field as their degree. I think that you’ve chosen a stellar field to go into and you’ve spent years learning the craft. I think you should think about what it is that you don’t like.

Is it the environment? Is it the company? Is it the work?

Once you’re able to answer this question, you’ll know which direction to take.

Have you considered staying within accounting but looking for a better fit as far as the working environment? There are plenty of companies that are fun to work for and have accounting departments.

If accounting is truly something you’re not interested in, I would open up your job search for careers in the financial sector. Your skills in accounting will be useful in other areas. Companies are looking for people who are trainable and can commit to the job. They don’t all care about what degree you chose but the fact that you completed your degree and that you can be trained for the job.
