I'm a Public Relations Student and I Can't Find an Internship. How Do I Create Opportunities for Myself?

Your Corporate Black Girl

Nikki,

I'm a public relations student and I can't find an internship. How do I create opportunities for myself? How do I build my portfolio and skills on my own?

-A Student In Toronto

Dear Hopeful in P.R.,

Have you been working with your student affairs or career counseling center to look into different opportunities or internships? What about professors? What have you done so far to get started?

If opportunity isn't knocking, then it's time to create it for yourself.

Think outside the box.

Not everyone knows how Public Relations works or if they even need it— if it's not something they've already budgeted for. You can build a portfolio by working with startups. Create packages of services that you can offer in a bundle and market to clients that can fit in your niche.

You just have to get started. It doesn't need to be perfect in order for you to get started. Just GO!

Good luck on your journey,
Nikki Davis
