After an Interview, I Heard That a Potential Future Boss Is Sneaky and Intimidated by Others. If Offered the Job, Should I Be Worried?

Your Corporate Black Girl

Dear Nikki,

A (trusted) friend that works at the company I just interviewed with, told me that the VP is outwardly nice but sneaky and intimidated by people smarter than her, and to be careful about challenging her. She's also super tight with the CEO and if you mess up you can be gone fast.

If the job is offered to me, she would be my boss' boss. Should I worry about this?

Dear Lane Changer,

Feedback is feedback. Luckily, this information comes from someone you trust but I'd always take information like this with a grain of salt. You may never know every detail of what's caused this source to have the opinion she/he has of this person.

If hired, your goal should be set on doing a great job and leading with integrity in everything you do. If you do this, there's nothing anyone else can do to stop you.

The key here is to focus on yourself. Stay in your lane and produce good work. Don't involve yourself in mess in the workplace.  Take the advice just as that, advice. Keep your eyes open and do a good job.

I think people lose sight of that when they deal with difficult leaders. Although some people in leadership shouldn't be leaders, that's out of your control so manage what you can control and that's your performance and your skillset. Focus on being an asset.

As you grow in your career, whether it's with this employer or somewhere else, you'll have to learn how to navigate working for and with difficult personalities. It's not fun but it's a part of any workplace.

Good luck on your job hunt,

Nikki Davis
